On the south-west side behind town the mountain Sarkofagen stands up.

The mountain is located between the to glaciers Larsbreen and Longyearbreen. On this trip we start by walking up towards the glacier Larsbreen and pass some exciting meltwater channels when we walk trough the moraine area of the Larsbreen.

From Larsbreen we make our way further up to the top of Sarkofagen at around 500 meters about sea level.

On top you can enjoy a great view of Longyearbyen and with clear weather also over Isfjorden. For the way back we walk down on the other side of Sarkofagen towards the glacier Longyearbreen and make our way back to town.

We recommend bringing a backpack for carrying food, drinks and equipment. You will get those things from us, but please bring a backpack and some extra warm clothes for during the breaks. Make sure you have solid hiking boots for winter conditions.

If the snow conditions demand, we use snowshoes.
