Wilderness Camp – 3 Days Hiking and Kayak – Ymerbukta

Arranged by Svalbard Wildlife Expeditions

Itinerary – Wilderness Camp in Ymerbukta

If you have three days for a true Svalbard adventure, we recommend joining our wilderness expedition camp. It’s our most popular summer tour and suitable for most people.

Day 1:

At 7:30 am, your guide will pick you up from your accommodation. After a quick briefing, we’ll pack the necessary safety gear and head to the harbor where the boat awaits. From there, we’ll sail to Ymerbukta and reach our camp by smaller boats. We’ll settle in and prepare for a kayaking trip. Wearing dry suits and life vests, we’ll paddle along the shoreline to the Esmark Glacier front. Before we set off, the guide will teach us kayaking techniques. Kayaking allows us to get up close to nature, spotting seals and seabirds. We’ll stop for lunch ashore with a view of the glacier. Back at camp, weather permitting, we’ll end the day around a bonfire.

Day 2:

After breakfast, we’ll pack our glacier gear and head to the impressive Esmark Glacier. With crampons, harnesses, and ropes, we’ll hike onto the glacier under the guide’s supervision. We’ll navigate over clear blue ice and deep crevasses, roped together for safety where needed. Lunch will be enjoyed on the glacier with stunning views. Returning to camp, we’ll prepare dinner and reflect on the day’s experiences.

Day 3:

We’ll dismantle the camp and go for a hike in the surrounding areas before the boat picks us up to return to Longyearbyen.

On the way back, we’ll pass by the Russian settlement Barentsburg and the abandoned mining town of Grumant. We’ll also enjoy the lively bird activity along the cliff face of Fuglefjella. Estimated arrival in Longyearbyen is 7:00 pm.

Please note that the tour schedule may change due to weather and group size. Weather conditions in Svalbard influence our plans, and the presence of polar bears in the camp will require adjustments to ensure their safety.

Daily distance in kayaks is approximately 15 – 20 km.

Periode: July – August

When: July to August
Duration: 3 days

Price: NOK 11 900,- pr. person
Price*: NOK 13.500,- pr. person (if only three participants)

General information:

Be aware that the length per day, the trip and the activities may change due to weather conditions and the composition of the group. Bad weather and wind might cause us to shorten or lengthen the trips from what is described here. If the group makes good time, we will change the pick-up place, thus enabling a longer trip. There will be time for the group, together with the guide, to plan some hikes. The area where we will kayak is filled with exciting and interesting history, and offers some really great wildlife experiences. We will meet birds and animals up close and hopefully get some good photo opportunities. All equipment and food will be brought with us in the kayaks, and we will establish a new camp every day.

Demands of participants:

It is advantageous that you are experienced in kayaking, but not necessary. However, if you have no kayaking experience, you must like challenges and be in good physical shape. We use stable double kayaks and keep close to the shoreline where possible. The tour is medium demanding and the participants should not have any problems with arms/shoulders.
